Project
management is a juggling act between time, cost
and quality.
Not only that, but there's also client
expectations to be managed.
This requires
a formal but flexible approach to all
aspects of a project.
All of our Project Management services are based
on the effective and common-sense
implementation of an Internationally recognised
structured project management
process - PRINCE2.
PRINCE stands for PRojects IN a Controlled
Environment. The original version was focussed
primarily on large IT Public Sector project
management but PRINCE 2 has been developed on
strong foundations to be applicable to all sizes
of projects and all types of businesses.
The biggest problem we see occurring on the
majority of sites is that a client's project
managers may have attended a 1 or 2 week
training course in PRINCE2 or some other project
management course. They are then considered
fully trained practitioners.
I'm sure you're aware that people retain a
limited amount of what is learned on a course
unless they are putting it all into practise.
So things get forgotten.
Also, the courses are structured (and quite
rightly so) to focus on the process, and the
project management body of knowledge behind it.
It does not focus on applying what's learned
with a heavy dose of common sense, and
commercial reality.
The end result, too often, is that either
structured project management gets forgotten
entirely (as you've got real work to do and
deadlines to meet); or, it gets implemented so
that it is too bureaucratic, and a project that
should take a month actually takes three!
There has to be a better way.
I'm pleased to say that there is, and it's a
question of applying common sense to each and
every project, and selecting the most
appropriate use of PRINCE 2 and the underlying
project management body of knowledge and tools.
